Finding the Right Therapist or Pyschiatrist

I have had my share of therapists and psychiatrists over the years. It’s important to try to find a good fit, if you can. My first psychiatrist decided to approach my illness from a secular point of view, because he didn’t believe in religion, even though I did and it was clearly influencing my illness. Because of this he diagnosed me with Schizophrenia without a second thought, as I was hearing “God’s voice." He was sure he was right. But after numerous meds didn’t take the voice away, he realized my Christian psychologist may have discovered the true cause of my illness, an obsessive tendency. My Christian psychologist was open to discussing my faith and its influence in my life, which is what I needed at that time.

Later on, I had a psychiatrist who was very negative about the outlook for my Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). She said that even though I was feeling better because of my spiritual quest, it would just morph and I would find something else to obsess about. She may have been right, but that kind of negativity wasn’t helpful. I have had a few psychiatrists who have been very good. They listen to me and ask good questions and always allow time for me to ask questions. I really appreciate them.

As for therapists, I have had some helpful ones and some not so helpful ones. Sometimes you just have to try a few until you get a good fit. Once you do get a good fit, you’ll know it and you’ll be thankful you have such wonderful help. I have had some that were truly life changing. There have been a couple that didn’t sit well with me though, and I knew it pretty early on. It’s important to listen to your inner senses and go with what feels right to you. Because you’re there to get help for you, not to please them. I wish you well in your journey!
